Armin Stuedlein, Ph.D., P.E., of Oregon State University (OSU) is the winner of this year’s DFI Educational Trust Young Professor Paper Competition for his paper, “Factors Affecting Reliability-Based Serviceability Limit State Design of Augered Cast-in-Place Piles in Cohesionless Soil.” He was assisted with the paper by graduate student Seth Reddy.
Dr. Armin W. Stuedlein, P.E., is the Loosely Faculty Fellow and assistant professor of Geotechnical Engineering at OSU in the School of Civil and Construction Engineering (CCE). Dr. Stuedlein received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in civil engineering (geotechnical), holds an M.S. from Syracuse University and a B.S. from the State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He joined OSU after working for five years in a concurrent position as a consultant for Seattle-based geotechnical firms, and is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Washington. His primary research interests center on the full-scale behavior, performance and reliability of geotechnical structures, including deep and shallow foundations, improved ground, and reinforced earth. Dr. Stuedlein is presently involved in an effort headed by the DFI Augered Cast-in-Place Pile Committee to identify a suitable capacity estimation method for use with building codes.
The Young Professor Paper Competition First Runner-Up is Kam Ng, assistant professor, Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering, University of Wyoming. His paper is titled “Towards a Performance-Based Design of Drilled Shafts.”
The awards will be presented at the DFI 38th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in Phoenix, AZ during the awards banquet on September 27, and Dr. Stuedlein will present his paper on September 28 to conference attendees. The competition papers will be published in the DFI Journal.
