Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) announces the availability of the most recent edition of the DFI Journal, a peer-reviewed publication of high-quality technical papers.
Volume 12, Number 3, an international issue with a practical focus on foundation design and a collection of great case studies, includes the following papers:
“Statistical Evaluation of Design Methods for Micropiles in Ontario Soils,” by Alexandre P. R. P. Almeida and Jinyuan Liu. Almeida was the 2018 DFI Student Paper Competition winner. In this research paper, Almeida, a graduate student at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, and his advisor, Professor Jinyuan Liu, studied a total of 47 full-scale micropile load tests to determine the most suitable design method to predict the geotechnical capacity of micropiles in Ontario soils.
“The Deep Soil Mixing for the Galataport Project in Istanbul, Turkey,” by Marco Chiarabelli, Salvatore Miranda and Federico Pagliacci. This case study describes the technologies and performance controls used for a comprehensive project that includes the construction of diaphragm walls, deep foundation systems, liquefaction mitigation, and implementation of dewatering systems.
“Settlement of Axially Loaded Pile Groups in Inhomogeneous Soil,” by Jamie J. Crispin and Colm P. Leahy. In this research paper, Crispin, the runner-up award winner of the 2018 DFI Student Paper Competition, and his Ph.D. advisor Professor Leahy, both at the University of Bristol, provide a closed-form analytical solution for the derivation of interaction factors between piles in a group configuration embedded in inhomogeneous soil.
“A Sensitivity Analysis on the Parameters Affecting Large Diameter Helical Pile Installation Torque, Depth and Installation Power for Offshore Applications,” by Giovanni Spagnoli, Cristina de Hollanda Cavalcanti Tsuha, Pierpaolo Oreste and Carlos Mauricio Mendez Solarte. The case study presents a sensitivity study on the uplift capacity of helical piles with different helix to shaft ratios.
“Measured End Resistance of CFA and Drilled Displacement Piles in San Francisco Area Alluvial Clay,” by T. C. Siegel, T. J. Day, B. Turner and P. Faust. This technical note presents a local relationship for the end resistance of continuous flight auger piles and drilled displacement piles for San Francisco Bay area clays.
